“but you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness” (Eph 4:20-24).
Before we put on the new man we have to put off the old man. What is Paul talking about ‘old man and the new man’? We no longer belong to the old man for he is crucified with Christ and raised again with Christ a brand-new man! This new man’s mind needs to be renewed daily by the Word of God. Our old un-renewed self is characterized our previous manner of life. We no longer conform ourselves to it rather walk in the consciousness of our new life in Christ.
1 Cor 2:16 says: “for who has known or understood the mind (the counsels and purposes) of the Lord so as to guide and instruct Him and give Him knowledge? But we have the mind of Christ and do hold the thoughts (feelings and purposes) of His heart.” Since we have the mind of Christ and hold the thoughts of His heart, His Word expresses His thoughts and thus we conform ourselves to His thoughts and purposes. We are instructed by God to spend time in His Word: read His Word, study His Word, memorize them and meditate them. We need to cultivate this mind of Christ we have and grow thereby nurturing and nourishing it! Peter in his first book 2:2 says: “like newborn babies you should crave the pure spiritual milk of the Word that you may grow thereby.” We are reading not only to know His thoughts and purposes but also to allow His thoughts (His Words) to take root in our hearts to transform us.
God’s Word is our daily manual to listen and yield to the very promptings of the Holy Spirit lives in us. He helps us in every aspect of our lives. Put on the new man means; walk in the thoughts and purposes of Christ. Walk in the reality of who you are in Christ! 2 Cor 5:17 says: therefore if any person is in Christ he is a new creation; the old (the previous moral and spiritual condition) has passed away. Behold, the fresh and new has come!” We know now how and let us practice by the help of the Holy Spirit. Very soon you will find yourself walk in different attitude, thoughts and even your speech will be affected in Christ-likeness. The New Man has new mindset, new attitude and he has a different language altogether.
“But be doers of the Word and not merely listens to it, betraying yourselves” (James 1:22). You have a victorious day!
